ABOUT THIS PAINTING

In Greenland, Tomasz explores his fascination with nature, landforms and meteorology through abstraction. Created with acrylics, sand, pumice and translucent mediums, the painting is both a scientist's and an artist's interpretation of a section of Greenland's coast, seen from the perspective of a polar-orbiting satellite.

Human-induced climate change is warming this region much faster than the global average. The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting and coastal glaciers are retreating, releasing meltwater and debris into the ocean. Shifting colours and textures suggest newly exposed land being colonised by lichens, mosses, grasses and other plants as the climate grows milder. The lower half of the abstraction represents submerged terrain, where the shallow continental shelf gives way to a rapid descent into the deep ocean.

The painting also invites a wider conversation about our relationship with nature, Greenland's growing geopolitical importance and the increasing interest in its coastal natural resources.

Colour and light

Online images may not fully capture the vivid colour palette and depth of this artwork due to colour compression and the limitations of screens. Colours that are often underrepresented on digital images include hues ranging from turquoise to deep blue.

The artwork's appearance varies considerably with changing ambient light (influenced by the time of day and weather), as well as the angle of view and the colour of the background. Hues of turquoise and blue look especially saturated, exhibiting a glow against greys and neutrals.
