Commissions

Take a moment to review the guide below before reaching out, as it provides important information to consider.

1. Painting

Commissioned artwork can be very special on a personal level as it provides a way to capture a specific moment, memory, or emotion. However, it is important to consider that commissioning artwork comes with a risk. Creating a piece of art is a highly subjective process, and there is always an element of uncertainty when it comes to the final result. What one person loves, another may not, especially when it comes to expressive and abstract forms or commissions based on personal references.

Producing a painting in a similar style to one that has already been featured on the website will likely result in a more familiar and predictable outcome.

2. Dimensions

Please indicate the approximate dimensions you are interested in. We offer standard canvas sizes, and the closest size to your requirement will be suggested. Custom canvases can also be ordered for an additional cost.

3. Budget

It is always helpful to include a budget in your enquiry. You can get a feel for the current prices by browsing our online store. Please note that as more paintings sell, prices may rise.

4. Deposits

Not all projects require a deposit and each commission is discussed individually.

5. Timescales

This depends on the complexity of the project, but there is normally a waiting list.

Instructions for customers

Instructions for customers

  1. Form enquiries

If you submit an enquiry via the form, you should receive a reply within a few days, usually sooner. If you don't receive a response, please check your junk mail just in case.

  2. Online store

Before purchasing any artwork, please ensure that you are completely satisfied with the images provided in the item store description, including close-up shots. If you require additional photographs or videos, you can request them via the enquiry form. Please note that some paintings may require additional time for drying and varnishing, and therefore cannot be shipped immediately. An approximate release date will be provided in the item description. In the event that a problem occurs (e.g., during varnishing) and there is a delay in delivering artwork for which you have already paid, you will be immediately notified via email and fully refunded.

  3. Viewing art before you buy

At present, only a limited selection of prints are available for viewing at For Arts Sake, located in Ealing, London.

  4. Payments

You can make payments for checkout purchases in the online store using major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay. For commissions, an agreement may be required, and a deposit and final payment can be made via instant bank transfer or credit card.

  5. Payment in instalments

UK customers can contact us via the enquiry form to discuss the possibility of reserving a more expensive painting and splitting the cost over a short period.

  6. UK shipping

Canvases up to 75cm in any dimension are usually dispatched within 48 hours for a flat fee of £40. If your painting is likely to be delayed, you will be notified via email. After dispatch, DHL guarantees 24-hour delivery for UK customers (i.e., 'by end of day' the following day). All shipments are automatically insured for damage or loss during transit. If you have a preferred delivery date, please send an email to art@schafernakerart.com with two 'by end of day' options. Please check your junk mail if you are still waiting for confirmation.

  7. International shipping

Canvases up to 75cm in any dimension are normally dispatched within 48 hours for a flat fee of £60. Larger canvases may require extra time for packing and an additional shipping fee - this will be highlighted in the item store description. You will be notified via email of your estimated delivery date and/or if your item is likely to be delayed. Please check your junk mail if you are still waiting for a confirmation. All shipments are automatically insured for damage or loss during transit.

  8. Collection

While collecting artwork in person is not usually an option, exceptions can be made for certain paintings. Please get in touch via the enquiry form if you would like to inquire about the possibility of collecting your artwork in person.

  9. Packaging

Artwork is packaged with foam corner protectors, bubble wrap, double wall cardboard padding in a double wall cardboard box. The artwork is also fully insured for the duration of shipment.

  10. Fixings

Paintings do not come framed unless specified. Art is shipped with D-rings and wire (i.e. ready to hang). This can be easily unscrewed for other types of framing later.

  11. Damaged art

All shipments are automatically insured for damage or loss during transit. If you receive damaged art, please contact us at art@schafernakerart.com. If it's evident that the damage occurred during shipment, we will offer you a refund, a replica, or a new commission

  12. Returns

Statutory return policies apply if you are unsatisfied with artwork purchased from the online store. The buyer must cover the cost of secure packaging and shipment with insurance for the value of the artwork. A refund will be issued once the unwanted artwork has been received and inspected within 14 days. Returns and continued handling increase the risk of damage to the art, and even a lightly scuffed canvas cannot be refunded. Rules may differ for commissioned work, so it is important to be absolutely satisfied with all the risks before making a purchase. For more information, please contact us via the enquiry form.

  13. Commissions

According to current copyright law, unless there is a signed agreement to the contrary, the artist typically retains the copyright for work commissioned by a third party.
